🐾 Approach it carefully

A lost animal is often stressed, hungry or injured. Even if it is usually friendly, fear can make it bite or scratch. Approach calmly, without sudden movements, speak softly and let it come to you.

A cat outdoors is not necessarily lost: many cats are allowed outside and sometimes wander far from home. A lost cat is usually thin, frightened or hungry, and may meow at front doors. If in doubt, put a paper collar on it with a message such as "Is this your cat? Call me at...": if it has an owner, they will contact you.
If the animal has died: wrap it in a cloth or a bag and take it to a veterinarian, telling them where you found it: they can read its identification and inform its owner. Do not throw it in the trash and do not hide it. You can also post an ad on the website: for the owner, knowing is always better than uncertainty.
