🐾 Understanding how a lost cat behaves
When a cat gets lost, frightened or injured, it instinctively switches to survival mode. Understanding this reflex is essential to focus your search effectively — and to keep your spirits up.In survival mode, your cat will not meow. Making the slightest sound would give it away to potential predators, so it stays completely silent — even if you are only a few steps away from it. Even if you call its name or shake a bag of kibble. It is hard to accept when you share such a strong bond with your cat, but it is pure feline instinct taking over to keep it alive.
Your cat will not come to your voice right away either. It will find a hiding place — sometimes incredibly close to home — crouch there and wait until it feels safe enough to move, or until hunger and thirst drive it out. This can take several days.
Do not lose hope: in the vast majority of cases, your cat is very close by. It is waiting for the right moment to come back to you.
- ✓ Search your home and its surroundings thoroughly. Check every possible nook: under porches, in garages, in cellars, behind hedges... Look under cars, including near the engine (cats like to hide there to enjoy the warmth). Make sure you wear a piece of clothing that carries your scent (so, unwashed).
- ✓ Put its litter box somewhere accessible (ideally kept dirty, so that it smells of your cat), along with its favorite toy and its bowl with some kibble in it and a bowl of water.
-
✓
If your pet is tattooed or microchipped, report its loss to the relevant organization in your country. While you are at it, check that your contact details (address, phone number...) are up to date.
- ✓ Check whether another user has already found your cat by looking at the list of found cats or display all the ads for found cats nearby on a map.
-
✓
Add your cat to the list of lost cats. Posting the ad is free and it sets the community in motion. You can post the ad on the website » or on the mobile app.
Your email address is hidden to protect your personal data.
Once your ad is posted, you will automatically receive emails or notifications if a matching cat is reported found nearby. You will also receive a ready-to-print flyer. - ✓ Print posters. When you posted your ad in the previous step, we created a poster for you: you received it by email and it is also available in your personal account.
-
✓
Go door to door in your neighborhood with your posters. When you meet your neighbors, urge them to check their cellar, their garage and their garden shed. Leave them a copy of your poster. Also distribute your poster widely in the mailboxes of the neighborhood.
Put your posters up in strategic places too: bus shelters, shops, schools, cash machines, post offices, town halls... Put one on the rear window of your vehicle as well. Also see the complete guide to lost cat posters ».
Talk again to passers-by, neighbors, shopkeepers... and above all leave them a copy of your poster so that they can get back in touch with you. Indeed, they may not have seen your cat at that moment, but they might spot it a few moments later, so they need to have kept your cat's description and your contact details.
If they care about animal welfare, you can invite them to download the mobile app so they can take an active part in searching for and rescuing lost animals. They will then find your ad and be able to get in touch with you. -
